My Travel Story

Hello,

My name is Veronica.  At this point in my life as a mature woman, I am feeling a tug on my heart to make a difference in this world in ancient places, places farther away than my own community.  I am feeling the need to experience something life changing. So, I am planning on a 22 day trip to Amman, Jordan, located in the Middle East - a place full of history, culture and in some parts of this country there are inequities and needs. I will be volunteering with IVHQ - "International Volunteer Headquarters" (IVHQ.org) an NGO with over 20 years of connecting commpassionate people with those in need. They are also imbedded in the local communities where they serve.

I'm willing to do what is most valuable and not just what is most exciting, and I plan to be committed to this volunteering project. I want to be there to have an excellent time but I also want to make a difference, and to contribute to the long term goals of a developing community. I have been working hard to prepare myself for the cultural and environmental differences that I will face because I know that my day to day life in Amman will be much different than I am used to here in the U.S. Therefore, I have been studying Jordanian culture and the Arabic language, and I have completed all recommended courses for volunteering abroad. I am currently studying how to teach English and I plan to complete the TEFL before my trip. 

My efforts in Amman will be focused, sustainable, respectable, substantial. Following IVHQ and their policies and guidelines to make  a real difference. I believe I can make a positive impact during my stay in Jordan by teaching English, volunteering in the Women and Girls Education Program, the Arts & Music Program for disadvantaged children, and helping local families in their homes. By this opportunity of cultural immersion, I can gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life. I hope to see the world with fresh eyes and to meet new people while working together toward a common goal and to form life-long friendships.
