My Travel Story

by: Katie Olding Start Date: Mar 12, 2018 - End Date: Jul 11, 2018
My future goal in life is to have a career as a volcanologist. Therefore, I was delighted to find out that I had been accepted to volunteer on the Volcán de Colima, as I this is what I'd love to do whenI graduate.

This project, volunteering as a research assistant at Volcán de Colima, will not only give me a hands-on, day to day experience of working in laboratories and on an active volcano, but the research I shall be undertaking will help improve our understanding of the volcano, and similar volcanoes, learning when new magma is rising in the volcano that could lead to an eruption. This is extremely important in a developing country like Mexico, as protection of infrastructure and people is limited, and therefore accurate prediction is vital. This is my main motivation for volunteering abroad.

This is why I chose to do research in Mexico, as the threat from volcanoes is a reality for those that live there, but with more research and monitoring those risks can be more easily understood and mitigated.

My past experiences have made me a very hardworking and determined individual, which can be evidenced by my achievements;
-Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award.
-Deputy Head Girl, at High School
-Representing my county at the English Schools Athletics Championships

Therefore, my past experiences will ensure that I make the most of every minute of my volunteering placement.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read and consider my funding request. Please Donate!
