My Travel Story

by: Meg Fraser Start Date: Dec 23, 2016 - End Date: Jun 22, 2017
Sri Lankan mental health is in need of aid!

I will be taking part in the level one mental health placement with SLV Global. Sri Lanka's mental health sector has a lack of resources. There is much need for psychological support which us as volunteers, can attain to provide. It is important for us to compensate for this lack in resources by improving the patients' psychological wellbeing and involvement in stimulating activities. As well as working with people who have mental health issues and special needs, I will be involved in teaching projects for a range of ages. This provides them with an increased confidence and even better career prospects.

I am currently in the first year of my psychology degree. This opportunity will deepen my knowledge in mental health and make me more aware of the daily experiences and challenges in that sector. I will even get to work with a mental health professional for a day, getting an extensive look at how another culture approaches mental illness.

I am very passionate about taking part in this placement. It will mean a lot to me to make a difference in a country so in need of support in their mental health sector. I do believe this is an experience of a lifetime and will strive to make it to Sri Lanka in July 2017.
