My Travel Story

by: Janelle Maurice Start Date: Jan 2, 2026 - End Date: May 1, 2026
After graduating with degrees in International Studies (Latin America & the Caribbean) and Media Production, I am taking one final step before beginning law school this fall: fully immersing myself in Colombian culture, language, and history. Having studied Spanish for eight years, I’ve learned that fluency is about more than grammar. It’s about listening, understanding context, and building trust across cultures.

Throughout college, I’ve worked in the criminal courthouse, researched civil liberties and police accountability, and led organizations focused on empowering Black women and strengthening civic engagement. Law school is the next chapter, but this experience in Colombia will shape how I enter it.

By engaging directly with Colombian communities, practicing Spanish daily, and observing legal and social systems outside the U.S., I will gain perspective that can’t be taught in a classroom. These insights will inform my future work in law, policy, and advocacy, especially in spaces serving Latin American and Caribbean communities.

Your support helps transform this trip into an investment in a future attorney committed to cultural competence, justice, and global understanding. Every contribution brings me one step closer to beginning law school with lived experience, confidence, and clarity of purpose.
