Dreams Across Oceans: Africans Children’s Exchange to Europe
My Travel Story
When they return, these children don't come back alone - they become multipliers. They will share with their peers what they have learned about rights, hygiene, school organization, and citizenship. They will teach other children to dream bigger. And I, as an activist, will document the entire experience in videos and reports to use as awareness material in schools in Matola, Maputo, and Beira. I will create small "exchange committees" in the neighborhoods so that more children have access to similar opportunities in the future. The impact doesn't end on the journey - it begins there.
I am passionate about this project because I grew up seeing bright children drop out of school due to a lack of hope. The problem is not just material poverty - it's a poverty of horizons. When a child from a poor neighborhood in Maputo has never seen a science lab, an airplane, or a well maintained public park, how can they imagine becoming an engineer, a doctor, or a university professor. This project shows, in practice, that the world is bigger than the harsh reality they know. And it shows that someone cares. That is priceless.
We chose Europe specifically for three reasons:
Spain because of the language and historical ties - adaptation is smoother, and children can learn without a complete language barrier.
Germany and France because they have structured Children's City programs and inclusive exchanges funded by social funds.
Italy and Belgium because they welcome African community projects and already have partnerships with Mozambican NGOs.
Europe offers safety, accessible public transportation, and a density of museums, model schools, and libraries that no other region so close to Mozambique can match.
What makes this significant is seeing the sparkle in the eyes of a child who has never left their neighborhood stepping into a public garden in Europe, or entering a free library. It's knowing that, years later, that child will remember the trip and will fight harder for their studies because they saw that there is a world where things work. It's also believing that this exchange breaks the cycle of "us here and them there" it shows that Mozambican children deserve the same opportunities as European children. And, for me, as an activist, it's proof that activism isn't just about denouncing problems, it's also about building bridges.
