Help me pursue my Masters in Criminological Research!
My Travel Story
I am reaching out in hopes of gaining support as I prepare to travel abroad in September to pursue my Masters in Criminological Research at the University of Liverpool. During my time in the UK, I am going to be learning not only advanced research methods but also how to translate that into actionable changes that we can make in our local context to be able to create a thriving and safer society in Canada. I will have opportunities to learn from leading academics and professionals about what it takes to make lasting changes in the field of criminology. I hope to exemplify the great professors and mentors that I have had and to pass my knowledge and my excitement for learning on to others.
Below are the main areas in that I will gain knowledge and expand my potential:
- Specialized knowledge: A Masters in Criminological Research will provide me with in-depth knowledge of theories, concepts, and practices related to criminology. I will gain a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system, crime prevention, and the societal impact of crime.
- Research skills: I will develop advanced research skills, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation. I will learn how to evaluate research and apply evidence-based approaches to problem-solving critically.
- Career opportunities: A Masters in Criminological Research can open up a range of career opportunities, such as working for government agencies, law enforcement, NGOs, research organizations, and academic institutions.
- International exposure: Studying in the UK can offer me the opportunity to interact with students from different countries, which can broaden my horizons and expose me to diverse perspectives.
- Networking: I will have the opportunity to network with professionals in the field of criminology, including academics, researchers, and practitioners.
- Personal development: Pursuing a masters degree requires discipline, dedication, and hard work. It will help me develop my critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as my time-management and communication skills.
The United Kingdom’s programming interests me because of the focus on advanced theoretical and practical training in research methods. It would broaden my understanding of correctional environments and build my research skills in ways unlike the programs in Canada.
However, I can not do this alone. This experience will be life-changing for me, but I need the help of my community to get me there. In my first psychology class, unconditional positive regard stuck with me. It is a concept from Carl Rogers, where in every interaction with another person, no matter who they are, where they are from, or their life circumstances, you treat them as human—from a president to an inmate. Everyone needs to be treated and unconditionally accepted as human—valid and deserving. It is a concept I have tried to take through all my experiences, and I hope will inspire you to help me make the world a bit of a better place through this trip. Thank you!
