My Travel Story

My name is Mary Smales, from an early age, I have been interested in the study of languages. I began school in French Immersion Elementary and continued through to Highschool from there. During that time I also studied Italian on weekends at the Calgary Italian Club. In high school I began studying Spanish.  Graduating in June of 2018 not sure of what I wanted to do in the future, I decided to take a year off to rest, work and travel.
I have always dreamed of living in France, and now I have the opportunity to do so with a program called CHI (Cultural Homestay International) World Explorers. During my 3-month stay in France I will be immersed in the French culture while living with a host-family and teaching them my first language, English. I will also be exploring the French city I will be living in.
Not only will I gain independence and patience while teaching, I will also have a chance to enhance my own French skills. I hope this experience will help me as well to gain insight of what I will be studying in the fall; International Relations at the University of Calgary.
