My Travel Story

Hello, my name is Jaynell McFarland and I am a full-time Junior at North Carolina State University, pursuing a major in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. I am a first generation college student born and raised in Prince Georges County, Maryland. My family and I lived in Raleigh, North Carolina for 4 years and we all really love it.

During my 2017 fall semester, I was given a wonderful opportunity to study abroad this summer of 2018! From June 1st through June 30th, I will be traveling to Italy to visit Perugia, Venice, Florence, and Assisi. I will be attending the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy. The purpose of this particular program is to help students who wish to acquire a genuine experience of Italian life, culture, history and culinary art, all while earning 9 academic credits.

Learning more about the Italian language and understanding its culture motivates me to study abroad. Throughout my college experience, I've always wanted to travel abroad and visit Italy to expand my knowledge of the environment. I also thought that it would be interesting to immerse myself in another country's education system to get the experience in understanding how other professors teach. Because of my interest of the country, I decided to join the Italian club and enroll myself into a three semester Italian class to see how well I would do. Based on my academics and progress so far in the class, I can honestly say that I absolutely love learning Italian!

Some of the personal benefits that I would expect to receive from studying abroad is to have an increased understanding of the language, their values, and beliefs. This will give me the opportunity to use my communication skills, enabling me to adapt to other individual’s environment, meet new people, make new friends and understand their lifestyle. Studying abroad may also enhance my chances for job success, increase my leadership skills, and allow me to network with other students studying abroad.

As excited as I am about studying abroad, unfortunately I do not have enough money to cover all of my expenses for the trip. I am doing all that I can by saving money, completing scholarships, and fundraising but I still do not have enough. My goal is to raise $4,000 by May 31st.

I created fundmytravel in hopes that you all could help me. If it’s in your ability to donate, please do so. There is no gift or contribution too small or too great. I am sincerely appreciative of everyone who would like to help! Thank you so much!
