My Travel Story

by: Matthew Lee Start Date: Jun 18, 2025 - End Date: Oct 17, 2025
Yello all, I'm Matthew Lee and I'm a Malaysian Paper Engineer. I need your help to send this aspiring, little guy, from Malaysia to USA for a very niche conference!

Why am I attending this conference?
  • To learn from worldwide paper engineers
  • To exchange knowledge and pop-up book exchange
  • To engage and network with international paper engineers in person
Paper engineering is a niche art but not a newcomer. It's been around since the 1200s and is expanding into the modern era.

The Movable Book Society [MBS], organized in 1993 by Ann Montanaro, is a world-wide organization of pop-up and movable book enthusiasts. The Society, with over 400 members world-wide, brings together paper engineers, librarians, scholars, collectors, and students of paper crafts. Movable books have a 700 year history.

The Society holds biennial conferences in different areas of the USA where it presents The Meggendorfer Prize to the best paper engineered book of the previous two years.

Also, I will be showcasing my first self-published pop-up book to the conference to increase cultural support from my country to USA.

Why Your Support Matters?
As a niche artist, I am passionate about bridging global knowledge gaps and ensuring that paper as a medium can be intriguing and exciting, which enables me to educate the next generation in the art of paper engineering. However, international travel is extremely expensive, and my minimum wage full-time job barely covers my living expenses. I have no institutional funding to cover flights, accommodation, and registration fees.

This opportunity is incredibly meaningful to me. Reprensenting myself as a Malaysian paper engineer is a big step toward my future career in arts and crafts, and STEM. With your support, I’ll be able to turn this dream into reality. Every dollar brings me closer. Thank you so much for supporting my dream to attend a paper engineering conference!
