My Travel Story

by: Brittany McConnell Start Date: Jun 1, 2016 - End Date: Sep 28, 2016
Most of you already know that I am heading to Bali this summer to take part in a mental health placement with SLV. The placement will last 4 weeks and involves working within a psychiatric hospital, teaching those in the local community english and working with individuals that have special needs. During this time I will be living with an Indonesian family and taking public transport to and from my placements.

SLV is a voluntary organisation which began in 2010 pioneered by Lucy Nightingale, a graduate psychology student from the University of Manchester who's main aim was to benefit a community in need of support. Together with Yasintha Rathnayake, a youth worker in Sri Lanka SLV were set up and over the years have been making significant changes in the lives of those suffering from mental illness.

The stigma towards mental health here in the UK is vast, however this is magnified in Bali and the work that myself and the team will carry out will be invaluable and ultimately create a more positive acceptance towards mental health. There is a significant lack of resources available within Indonesia to deal with the magnitude of mental illness within the Balinese communities, therfore the projects that SLV run are essential in order to educate and assist those working within the mental health sector. The aim of my placement is to reach into the community though therapeutic activities using music, sensory and creative tasks which aim to promote cognitive development and personal growth.

My participation in this programme is completely voluntary and I will not be paid for my involvement, therefore it is necessary that I fundraise allowing me to make a difference in the lives of those I am working with.
