My Travel Story

by: Rebecca Nolph Start Date: Apr 7, 2016 - End Date: May 21, 2016
Hello, friends!  I have always wanted to work with primates and help our non-human relatives in any way possible.  In the first step towards my dream career, I have been accepted by Globalteer, a UK charity providing volunteer placement all over the world, to volunteer at the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre on Sulawesi Island in Indonesia!! (Be sure to check out the video above!)

About Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre
Sulawesi Island is most unfortunately a jumping off point for illegal shipments of animals for the exotic pet and ‘medicinal’ markets in Asia as well as having a thriving local bush meat industry. Many of the rescued animals arrive to Tasikoki in a stressed and neglected state and need a period of rehabilitation and veterinary care to bring them back to health. Unfortunately some are permanently disabled, stressed or domesticated and will never recover sufficiently to live in the wild.

In addition, many of the animals rescued in Sulawesi such as orangutans are not native to the island, but have been seized from smugglers as part of the exotic pet trade, and cannot safely be released to an unfamiliar habitat or imposed upon local ecosystems. Tasikoki endeavours to preserve these animals' dignity by creating habitats where captive animals may thrive. It is hoped that these animals may enjoy the best quality of life possible in captivity. For more information on the Centre, visit their webpage.

My Role and Why I Need Your Help
Through my volunteer service, I will be aiding this fantastic organization in helping to create a safe and natural environment for the animals they harbor. At the centre, they have orangutans, several species of macaques, gibbons, sun bears, various species of parrots, cockatoos and other exotic birds, and reptiles.

My duties at Tasikoki will include, but I'm sure are not limited to: cleaning enclosures; gathering, preparing, and giving food to the animals; providing life enrichment for the animals; maintaining and cleaning the centre itself; upgrading enclosures; and assisting the education department in their continued efforts to stop illegal smuggling.

This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime to get hands-on experience in the career field of my dreams.  This is how I will help make this world a better place.

In order to get to Indonesia, however, I need your help!  There is a placement fee that covers lodging and all my meals for 6 weeks, retrieval from the airport, and any necessities that I might need while in the country. Part of the placement fee also goes directly to the centre, helping them succeed in their mission.  Not only that, but my plane ticket is not cheap!  If you can spare anything at all, it would mean the absolute world to me, and it would help dramatically in getting me to Indonesia. You will be helping me help these animals in a HUGE way.

I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart.
