My Travel Story
Who am I?
Hi my name is Avyandra and I am from Nepal (I selected my home country as UK because Nepal was not an option). I have always dreamed of studying abroad after high school but due to covid my family's financial situation has been dire. I want to study AI since I've always been passionate about computers. It is the future. I graduated high school in August of 2023. I am passionate about swimming, playing guitar, singing, basketball, mixology, chess and watching tv shows. My ultimate goal is entrepreneurship and to leave a positive impact in this world.
Why UK?
The United Kingdom was on the top of my list due to their academic and research excellence, cutting edge technology and cultural diversity. As an Applied AI student I would also have the opportunity to work with the top companies in my field. They also allow students to work part time, this way I would be able to manage my expenses and not pressure my family too much.
Why University of Bradford?
The university is highly ranked and along with good education they have very good employability rates. The city of Bradford is also centrally located providing easy access to other places, but the main reason I chose this University was due to the generous 50% scholarship offered to international students who want to study the Bsc Applied Artificial Intelligence course. This scholarship made my dream of studying in a world class university a realistic goal financially.
Why AI?
I've always been fascinated by computers and technology, the field of AI is revolutionary and I want to be a part of it. I want to leave a positive impact on my country and my world and through the knowledge of AI this can be made possible. To help my country I could bring changes in sectors such as healthcare and medicine, traffic, construction, cyber security, education, cut down millions of labour hours on repetitive government tasks etc the possibilities are endless. I want to have a hand in shaping the humanities future hence I want to pursue AI.
Why help me?
I am very ambitious and have the confidence to bet on myself. I've had to endure a lot from having to overcome being a morbidly obese kid with a horrible stutter and often being bullied in school to having to step up when my family had a financial crisis. My parents were in a lot of debt and due to covid and the economy crashing in Nepal it just got worse. It broke my heart to find out how bad it really was and although I was furious I did not blame them knowing they felt even worse not being able to provide for their only child. I knew I had to do something so I started tutoring in order to be financially independent. I managed to fund my own SAT and IELTS exams and despite a day's worth of preparation for each exam (I did not have time as I was tutoring so many students), I managed to score 1460 and 8.0 respectively. My parents had to sell our scooter too but I managed to buy a cheap one of my own as I needed a mode of transport. I also paid to go to a bartending school and then worked as a bartender. I managed to tutor 6 different students at different times and places while working a 10 hour shift as a bartender every day of the week for a few months before finally my students were done with their exams. Most of the money I gave to my parents and the rest I invested in myself.
It's heartbreaking to know that I did all I could, I managed to get good grades even though I was working part time, I managed to learn new skills, I managed to be financially independent and give back to my parents and yet my study abroad dreams would not be a reality. My parents have told me they will manage to pay for it somehow but I don't want to pressure them, hence why I came to you.
