My Travel Story

Me gustaría 5 minutos de vuestro tiempo para hablaros de una idea que tengo ya que quizás me podáis ayudar.

Cada vez que veo en las noticias las barbaridades que están sufriendo los refugiados me da un vuelco al corazón. Porqué yo tengo el privilegio de vivir tan bien y ellos han de sufrir tanto. Es una injusticia. Y yo como persona humanitaria y altruista, cada vez que veo a alguien sufriendo una injusticia, siento la necesidad de ayudar. 

Llevo desde muchos meses sintiendo esta necesidad. Pero hasta ahora no me había llegado a plantear la posibilidad de ir a Grecia y ayudar. Pensé que no tenía el tiempo o el dinero. ¡Pero qué cosas! Con 23 años y recién acabada la carrera ¡tengo tiempo!, bueno en verdad siempre se puede hacer tiempo... Y gracias a las nuevas tecnologías y plataformas cómo esta, no es tan difícil recaudar el dinero necesario para desarrollar una idea que te apasiona. ¡O eso espero! 

Es un momento histórico importantísimo y quiero formar parte de él. Me hace sentir mal quejarme de la situación desde mi casa y luego no hacer nada. Así que he decidido tomar acción e irme como voluntaria a Grecia. Necesito ver con mis propios ojos lo que está sucediendo y ayudar con mis propias manos a aquellos que están sufriendo. Sé que no voy a aliviar la situación o hacer que cambie nada de la noche a la mañana. Pero yo creo que aún aportando sólo un pequeño granito de arena es algo valioso. Y la concienciación y sensibilización tanto propia como de aquellos que me rodean que dará lugar la experiencia también será valiosa.

Aunque en los medios de comunicación se esté dejando de escuchar sobre la situación de los refugiados en Grecia debido al paro de entrada personas y a la evacuación de varios campamentos, sigue siendo una realidad dramática para  miles de personas aún asentadas allí.

Me he puesto en contacto con varias ONGs que están trabajando en Grecia por la causa para ofrecerme como voluntaria. Todavía no tengo nada fijo ya que la incertidumbre y la inestabilidad ahí es enorme. De cualquier manera, tengo en mente varios campamentos de refugiados en los que la ayuda es siempre necesaria. (Por favor estar al tanto de la sección de abajo "Updates", donde hablo de las ONG con las que he estado en contacto, y del progeso del proyecto- clickea "show more" hay varias entradas escritas!). 

Por tanto me gustaría ir de voluntaria a Grecia durante un mes y medio. Tengo la intención de irme el 15 de agosto hasta finales de septiembre.
 
Con lo que recaude en esta página pretendo no sólo cubrir los gastos de viaje sino también llegar a donar a proyectos locales. Además, me comprometo a manteneros al día (a través de fotos/videos/blog) de lo que va ocurriendo y de la verdadera realidad que se vive ahí. 


Os mantendré al tanto de como va avanzando este proyecto.

Dear family and friends,


I would like 5 minutes of your time to tell you about a little plan I am trying to develop since you might be able to help.

Every time I hear in the news the barbarities that the refugees are suffering it breaks my heart. Why do I have the privilege to live as good as I live and they have to suffer this much. It is an injustice. As a humanitarian and altruist individual, I cannot stand injustices. If I see someone suffering an injustice, I feel the need to help.

I have been feeling this need for months. But I hadn’t considered the possibility of actually going to Greece and helping. I thought I had no time or money. But what a thing to think! I am 23 years old and I have just graduated. I have the whole world in front of me. So, I have made the time, and hopefully with this initiative I will manage to fulfill my plan.

It’s an incredibly important historical moment, and I want to be part of it. I feel bad when I complain about a situation and not do anything about it. So I have decided to take action and go volunteer to Greece. I need to see with my own eyes what is happening there and help with my own hands those in need. I know that I am not going to change anything in such a short period. But I think that offering a bit of myself is already something valuable. And the sensitization and awareness that this experience will result in me and those who surround me will also be very valuable.

Even though the media has stopped covering as much the events in Greece since the closure of the entrance of people and the evacuation of some of the camps; it continues to be a dramatic reality for thousands of people still settled there. 

I am in contact with various NGOs working for the cause in Greece offering myself as a volunteer. I don’t have anything fixed yet since the uncertainty and instability there is huge. Eitherway, I have in mind various settlements in which help is always needed. (Please check the "Updates" section underneath, where I explain with which organizationas I have been in contact and the progress of the project - click "show more" there are a few posts!).

Therefore, I would like to go to Greece to volunteer for a month and a half. More or less from the 15th of August to the end of September.

With the money I fundraise in this page I will not only try to cover my travel expenses but also collect some to donate to local projects. Moreover, I commit to keeping you updated (with photos/videos/blog) of what is happening there and the true reality of their lives. 
 

I will keep you posted with any progress I make.

    ¡Ya tengo billetes!
    MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS a todos por vuestra increíble generosidad. Nunca pensé que este proyecto fuese a llegar a tantas personas y que fuese a recibir un apoyo tan grande! Me siento tan afortunada de estar rodeada de personas tan compresivas, generosas y humanitarias. Y de poder compartir este viaje con vosotros.
    Se va aproximando la fecha de inicio y así el proyecto va tomando forma. ¡Ya tengo los billetes! ¡Qué emoción! Llego el día 15 de agosto a Salónica. Ahí voy a colaborar con una ONG griega llamada PRAKSIS, que trabaja en varios campamentos de refugiados en el norte de Grecia. También tienen voluntarios en Lesvos y en Atenas, pero por ahora me han recomendado que vaya a Salónica. Todavía nos queda por definir cuales van a ser las labores que realice, pero debido a la incertidumbre que se vive ahí, hasta que no se acerqué más la fecha de llegada, no podrán definir con precisión. Aún así, estoy en constante contacto con ellos y confío en poder realizar una buena labor con ellos.
    Os mantendré informados por aquí con los avances que vaya tomando.

    THANK YOU all so much for your incredible generosity. I never thought this project would reach so many people, and that I would receive such great support. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such comprehensive, generous and humanitarian people and to be able to share this trip with you.
    The starting date is getting closer and with that, the project is taking shape. I bought my plane tickets! So exciting!! I arrive the 15th of August to Thesaloniki. There I am going to be collaborating with a greek NGO called PRAKSIS, which works in various refugee camps in the north of Greece. They also have volunteers in Lesvos and Athens, however, they have recommended me to start in Thesaloniki. We are still defining what my tasks will be, but due to the uncertainty they live there, they won't be able to define more precisely until August. Still, I am in constant contact with them and I trust I will be able to do something meaningful with them.
