My Travel Story

by: Monica Aaron Start Date: Oct 8, 2023 - End Date: Feb 7, 2024
I am currently a PhD. scholar completing my proposal to conduct research on a qualitative, phenomenological study to explore the lived experiences of African American male youth 18-25 in college with current or formerly incarcerated fathers and their perceptions of their father’s involvement as an influence on cognitive engagement and resilience in school, in the state of Florida. Attending the Tampa Bay Criminal justice summitand many more are opportunities that will allow me to learn about the most recent changes in criminal justice laws and reform efforts in the state of Florida. As a single mom, it is difficult for me to attend these events due to my limited finances. The help of donors would assist me with acquiring the additional knowledge that I would need to support my proposed research study. As an educator, I ampassionate aboutthis topic because I have seen the affects of parental incarceration for the African American boy as many have succumb to the school to prisonpipeline. Although there is a lot of research on the negative affects of parental incarcertation, there are limited studies on young African American males who have decided to attend college despite their adversity of having an incarcerated father. My goal is to conduct research that will shed light on this phenomenon, to assist with the need for more interventions, school and family support and a decrease in long prison sentences that disproportionately affect African American men and their families.
