Three years ago, I truly did not believe the academic world was for me. Fast-forward to the present day and I will provide a different answer. Upon returning to school after a medical leave, I realized during my time away that the details of life that I was frustrated with were the details I also was desperately curious about. Anthropology came into my life at a time where I felt angry, helpless, and exhausted. I have found a purpose in helping others by learning to become a true ally. These funds will help me further my academic goals of continuing my education. I will use these funds to help lessen the stress of my two study abroad trips this summer. The planned trips to Belize and the United Kingdom will not only expand my experiences as a person who hopes to continue in education but the trips will also help with my applications to graduate school. My focus is understanding the intersections of public health and gender roles.

Globally, an estimated 35% of women worldwide have experienced some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. Annually just under 700,000 children are estimated to be victims of abuse and neglect. I would like to research the connections between these statistics to deepen my understanding of the status of women in relation to the overall health of a society.
