Cycle to Farms. 7000km and 10 months.

Mission:
Many problems in the food system that we experience today have their roots in how we treat our soil, how we grow our food and what we eat. Our project ‘Cycle to Farms’ aims to document different farmers' realities across EU and Africa while cycling. Looking at what regenerative agriculture means in practice for different arable commercial farmers that we will visit.

How?
We will cycle from Wageningen (The Netherlands) to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) which is ±7 000 km of cycling. Cycling enables us to document environmental, social and economic changes in the environment which we would not be able to capture with the use of other transportation methods. We want to document and share our journey with you and to reach out to a community of travellers, adventure seekers and fellow citizens of the world who are interested in sustainable development of the world's food system.

Impact?
Building awareness about the benefits of regenerative agricultural practices,
Creating an understanding of how different factors (such as geographical, economic and environmental changes) impact incentives for regenerative farming practices,
Creating a movement of cyclists advocating for the development of cycling facilities in their own countries.

Your contributions
We have been investing in realizing this initiative by purchasing touring bikes and some camping gear. After calculating the budget, we realize that to achieve our goals, we need your help to cover some of the expenses. Your contribution will help us to buy:

  • Biking gear and bike maintenance,
  • Things to eat and to drink, so we do not appear hangry on the videos we post…;
  • Electronics (navigation and batteries to keep us charged);
  • Occasional accommodation (avoid being eaten by bears, lions and dragons);
  • Camping gear (to always have a roof);
  • Vlogging equipment to create great content for you that will make you smile;
  • Health (PCR tests, vaccines, malaria, etc),
  • Unexpected expenses (to be ready for the unknown).

What’s in there for you?

  • You get video content updates,
  • You help to spread the word about regenerative agriculture,
  • You learn about farmers around the world,
  • You support two young graduates,
  • You learn about our adventures cycling trip through Europe and Africa,
  • You get INSPIRED!
The Team:
We (Lukas & Aisha) are both recent Wageningen University and Research (www.wur.nl/en) MSc graduates who have an interest in sustainable food systems (such as regenerative agricultural practices). Our mission is to understand the challenges of a sustainable food system and to tackle these problems. We both love cycling, making videos and encouraging others to do the same.
