My Travel Story

This experience is a volunteer program through the International Volunteer Headquarters in Lovina, Bali. Throughout this one-month engagement experience, I will teach English to students at an after-school program, working 30-35 hours per week. The day-to-day teaching volunteer work includes lesson planning in the morning, then educating 8–12-year-old students about the English language. Paired with another volunteer or teaching alone, I will provide pronunciation, vocabulary, and general language guidance to a classroom of approximately 15 students. I will be fully immersed in the Balinese culture during this summer school session as I have a week of training to learn their style of teaching, then follow a syllabus to generate my own individualized lessons of the language, including getting creative to teach through games, songs, sports, and art. Not only does this program allow you to develop and grow your intercultural communication skills and make a positive impact on the local community, but it also broadens global perspective and enhances cultural exposure as the group travels to different historical and well-known sites, or roams the local community, on the weekend to explore Bali further. I am eager to volunteer through this abroad experience as I get to share an important aspect of my culture while engaging and engrossing myself in a completely new culture.
