My Travel Story

by: Jona Block Start Date: Apr 16, 2023 - End Date: Aug 15, 2023
Since last August, I have been enrolled in an international master's program studying Crisis Management & Humanitarian Assistance. I have been studying the most effective ways to provide aid to communities in need. Visiting refugee camps in Jordan, migrant health clinics in Turkey, asylum centers in Serbia, and more, have shown me real world examples of how to provide essential, life-saving services to people in a crisis.

This summer, I will be volunteering with an organization called Solidarity Engineering. They provide essential services to the thousands of migrants who are trapped on the US border waiting to apply for asylum. They are in desperate need of basic goods like food, water, shelter, education, and medical care. I will crossing the border into the camp in Reynosa, Mexico. I will be helping out with many different tasks - distributing water and health supplies, building structures, monitoring the crisis, and documenting the work with my photography.

The volunteering / internship position will be unpaid, so I am reaching out to friends and family asking for them to contribute to help cover the expensive time spent working with organization helping migrants. A portion of the funds will be donated directly to Solidarity Engineering.

This is an important opportunity for me to put all that I've been studying in school into practice and begin my career providing aid to people in need. I appreciate all the support as I continue on this journey!
