My Travel Story

by: Ashley Ephraim Start Date: Jan 3, 2017 - End Date: Apr 30, 2017
Hello! My name is Ashley Ephraim, and I’m a third-year Journalism study with a primary focus on Photojournalism at the University of Texas at Austin. I was born and raised in a low-income neighborhood in Beaumont, Texas, which has shaped my future goals. In my photojournalism career I want to work on long-form stories that focus on social issues and the various outcomes associated with growing up with different lifestyles.

During my freshman year at UT, I had the opportunity to take Professor Dennis Darling for Photographic Communications, and that class solidified my love for Photojournalism by forcing me to go out of my comfort zone for the weekly assignments. Being accepted into this Maymester with Professor Darling will give me the chance to work closely with him while going out of my comfort zone even more and possibly make connections abroad that could help with my future career path.

Graciously, I was able to secure a scholarship that would cover half of this program...the other half is on me. Being that I put myself through college, I will be unable to work for the entire time I'm away and the thoughts of how that could affect me are quite scary. I want to leave the country knowing that I have enough funds if a situation were to arise to be secured.

A bit about the program: "This course consists of lectures on documentary photographic techniques and aesthetic principles as well as practical work on location. During the classroom sessions, your photographs will be analyzed and critiques will offer direct feedback on content, storytelling, creativity, and the technical aspects of your images."

I thank you all for even clicking on this page, and even if you aren't able to donate, sharing would also help.
