My Travel Story

by: Chloe Avila Start Date: Mar 29, 2025 - End Date: Apr 24, 2025
My name is Chloe Avila, and I am an undergraduate multimedia journalism major. I am so excited to share that I have been accepted to intern abroad through my university's Writing in Action program. I will be staying on campus at the University of Edinburgh with other students and two writing professors. In this program, I will learn how to write in an international setting and get to intern with a Scottish charity!
Some of the charities include:
  • St Colomba's Hospice
  • Scotland's Garden Scheme
  • The Yard
  • Multi-Cultural Family Base
  • Project Esperanza
  • Think Circus!
  • Family Journeys
  • Edinburgh Leisure
When I was in elementary school, I didn’t have many friends, so I turned to books. I made thousands of friends and explored hundreds of worlds. I owe it to writing alone for making me who I am today. So, like my thousands of friends, I need to explore my world.  Eventually, reading turned into an urge to learn more. I used to think my purpose was to be a doctor in the medical field, so I started at GVSU as a biomedical major. Right off the back, my need to further my education slowly disappeared, but one summer day, I picked up a book. School started again, but all I wanted to do was read. In the winter semester of my sophomore year, I knew something wasn’t right. I realized that the degree I was getting wasn’t one I wanted. My mother told me what I had to hear, “not everything is about money. You shouldn’t have to wake up every day for the rest of your life going to a job that doesn’t interest you.” It’s my junior year of college, and I have yet to explore the world. I have always wanted to study abroad, so when I received the first email, I was excited, but my anxiety got the best of me. Studying abroad will fulfill my younger self’s dream and allow me to see life through new lenses. This particular program is perfect for me academically. The class WRT 357 is an issue, and SWS, I still need two issue classes and only one more SWS class to cover all my gen eds. I also require an internship to graduate, and after graduation, my goal is to move to London, UK. Studying abroad in Scotland will help give me an understanding of the United Kingdom and allow me to see if living in another country is something I want and can do. I like how the internship will be working at a nonprofit/charity to address economic and social issues because right now, in the United States of America, everything is unknown, and it scares me. I want to help, but I do not know how to. Furthermore, I truly think this internship will help me personally, academically, and professionally. I hope that I can participate in this adventure abroad, and if given the chance, my all will be given.

However, I need your help to make this dream a reality. The cost of studying/interning abroad is significant, and I am seeking support to cover these expenses. Your generous contributions will go towards:
  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation
  • Travel expenses
  • Study materials
  • Everyday living needs
Every donation, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to achieving my dream. I am deeply grateful for any support you can provide. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing my campaign with others!

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for your support! Please keep my journey in your prayers.

Best,
Chloe Avila
