My Travel Story

by: Emily Brennan Start Date: Aug 4, 2022 - End Date: Dec 3, 2022
Good day to you! I am currently enrolled at my local university as a mathematics major (applied mathematics track). My minors are in Computer Science and Finance. I have three more semesters left until I graduate with my bachelor’s degree. My ultimate career goal is to become an actuary. I was recently accepted into an undergraduate research program for minorities. Related to this, I received news from the school that I would be able to attend a STEM conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico! I would be expected to be in PR for three nights and four days (from Wednesday, 26 October 2022 - Saturday, 29 October 2022.

The travel expenses will mostly be paid for (airfare, meals, registration for the conference) and lodging. I would be required to room with another individual, or else I must pay for a private hotel room, and they may pay for 50% of the total cost.

I am panicking about rooming with someone I do not know, trust, etc., because I am clinically paranoid. Along with this mental illness, I also suffer from anxiety. This rooming with a stranger is just not conducive to my peace of mind, ability to sleep, and so much more. I take meds at night that have a sedative effect and snore like a freight train, so if I could even fall asleep, my poor roommate would also suffer!

This trip would be my first time traveling outside the continental US, and I am incredibly excited about this opportunity! Currently, I work as a part-time remote mathematics tutor. Still, I do not make much money, especially this past summer; the work was relatively nonexistent due to school’s summer break.

This may sound silly, but I am also requesting additional assistance to purchase ~3 business casual outfits, a travel umbrella, and a carry-on bag. I would greatly appreciate any financial assistance anyone can offer. If you feel more comfortable going through CashApp($parallelepiped) or an Amazon Wishlist, I completely understand and am not opposed to these methods! As previously mentioned, they may pay 50% of the hotel room, which would be $416 - $407 depending on which of the three hotels they actually decide on. If the school eventually decides that I must pay 100% of the lodging (~$832), I wanted to include that in the donation total just in case.

With sincere gratitude,
Emily B
