Hazard Harvard!
My Travel Story
My fiancée and I have decided to spend a bit of our time over the next 2 years traveling around the world to encourage smart students who are ambitious but unfortunately, are at a disadvantage because of unfavorable financial conditions, to think big and chance applying to top schools, including Ivy League Schools in the United States. Thus, our Hazard Harvard! slogan.
We plan to organize a series of workshops that will help students write well, learn about college education, Engineering careers and opportunities available to them abroad. As engineers with many years of experience in cutting edge science and nanotechnology, we hope to inspire these students to choose careers in science and engineering. It is equally our hope to be able to assist with top students in each country (2 per country) we will visit in their application to top colleges.
Our planned trips to Haiti, Chad, Central African Republic, Cuba, and Mali seek to contribute to addressing a critical lack of information concerning admission to high-profile schools in most low-income countries. The story of young Richard Turere (see video) is there to tell us that there is no shortage of talent around the planet and in-low income countries in particular. While there is certainly a shortage of resources in such places, access to information could be the game-changer. By providing key information that can help ambitious students in impoverished areas move up the prongs of the social ladder, education is probably one of the most reliable and effective means of leveling the plane field.
Our project does not just seek to expose smart students to the best opportunities out there. We also see this endeavor as an opportunity to make a long-lasting impact on their lives. Research shows that first-generation college students not only transform their own lives but also create opportunities for many generations down the line.
We choose to act in Haiti, Chad, Central African Republic, Cuba, and Mali because some of these countries are among the poorest countries in the world. My fiancé and I are both passionate about making an impact.
Your donation will help us fulfill our dream by providing means to fund our travel and support ourselves during those trips. But it will also serve to organize the actual seminars, purchase necessary training materials. Yet, we plan to go beyond and support a dozen of students throughout the application process, by mentoring them, helping them polish their writing and cover expenses related to applications to Ivy League and top US schools. We will link them to our network and increase their exposure. With your help, we hope to raise about 60 grants. If we are able to help 10 students (2 per country) secure a scholarship in a top US school, then we will have reached our goal. Considering the cost of education at US schools ($92,000 per student at Ivy League schools for instance), we see this project as a chance for you, our donors, and us to make a long-lasting impact on low-income family’s lives. In financial terms, each dollar you give works in excess of five times more effectively. We really believe that education is one of the investment with the highest return and one which allows each dollar to work at maximum capacity. With your help, we hope to multiply the odds of success and to do that where it matters most.
