My Travel Story

Hi friends and family!

As you all know I am about to turn sweet 15 (times 2) this year and I have decided to finally make my goal of volunteering abroad come true, as they say "just go for it"! As a 4th year dentistry student at Vilnius University I am able to take part in a Dental Internship Volunteer Program and I would be really grateful if you could support me on my journey & hopefully that way we can make a difference together :)

Tooth pain is one of the worst pains a human gets to experience, next to pain during child birth and inflammation to the main nerves in our head/face region. Access to dental health is the most neglected especially in low-income and middle-income countries. According to some statistics one dentist per 50 000 people is available (compared to Germany and UK where there is one dentist per 1000 people). Therefore rural low income communities with no access to decent dental health care, children with no education in this field due to their poor economic status will go untreated for any dental problems or toothaches. Since oral health is linked to other diseases it is important to remember that neglecting this area also can worsen overall health of the individual.

I believe that everyone should have an access to regular check-ups and education regarding dental health no matter their economic background. This is the reason why I would like to volunteer in this program in order to make a contribution in improving the health status and educate communities in Cuso,  Peru. I believe I will be able to also apply my knowledge about social and cultural interactions and work on establishing patient doctor relationships, while learning and growing as an individual and professional myself. I am also looking for ward to improve my language skills and of course apply my current meical skills out in the field.

During this internship I will be able to assist local dentist, organize dental Day Camps and visit public schools and children kindergartens centers and teach the importance of oral hygiene.

Thanks a lot for taking your time to read about my campaign and many thanks in advance for your support!

Take care,
Alissa Xx
