Teaching Fellowship in India
My Travel Story
From 2017-2018 I was an AmeriCorps member and worked with 10th grade at Omaha Northwest High School. Fifty percent of my students were refugees and all of my students identified as low-income. Many of them had other concerns outside of school including; helping their parents pay for bills, cultural differences between their personal beliefs and their parents, transportation barriers, and even food insecurity. I was happy that in my year of teaching my students raised their college entrance exams by 23 percent. This is even with all other outside distractions/concerns in their lives. Many people don’t realize that students who identify as low-income are highly motivated to improve their lives through education. They just need some extra guidance along the way. By seeing this improvement it has motivated me to continue to work on closing the education gap. I know that most students want to improve their education but sometimes do not always know how to. The extra guidance these specific students received lead to 98 percent of them going to college.
I then went on to teach English abroad in China. I learned that you can connect with students even when there is a language barrier. I enjoyed traveling, learning more about the history of where I was living, but most of all teaching students English and learning more about their lives through that process. I know that I can connect with students even if we don’t speak the same language and that connection is incredible.
In conclusion, I have worked with people aged 113 all the way down to age two. One of my best qualities is my ability to connect with any age group. I know this is a quality that will help me with this fellowship opportunity. I am excited to share new ideas with others, as well as, learn ideas from them. Being able to collaborate in this experience is something I am incredibly excited to do. Through my prior experiences, I know I am a good candidate for this fellowship.
***I was so excited when I was accepted and I am even now more excited that it is official! I am going to India for the month of July. (It is quickly approaching.) If you believe in education equity, lowering the education gap around the world, and making a difference in other's lives, please consider donating to my fellowship abroad. The teachers and students in India will be impacted by several fellows giving up their time to make a difference this summer.
