My Travel Story

by: Hillary Carnall Start Date: Nov 9, 2018 - End Date: May 2, 2019
I recently got accepted to join a group from the University of Indianapolis to walk the Camino de Santiago! El Camino de Santiago is a religious pilgrimage. It translates to, "the way of St. James." Jeremiah Gibbs, UIndy's chaplain, plans for our group to walk the Camino for 165 miles for 21 days. More information on the Camino itself can be found in the Youtube videos and our itinerary is linked below!

I actually knew what the Camino was before coming to the University of Indianapolis, which was during my senior year of high school in Mrs.Lutkus's class. I was excited when I heard that UIndy's chapel took a group of students to walk the Camino. Learning about it was interesting, but I want to experience the Camino outside the classroom. At the introductory meeting, Jeremiah discussed that many pilgrims travel on the Camino for a variety of reasons. For me, the Camino would be a way to discover my purpose in life. My goal is to make it a religious experience. I want to figure out how I can grow as a person. The Camino offers a special gift of helping pilgrims as they walk through Spain. I imagine the Camino enabling me to be completely present with God. It is a way of connecting to the Lord that I have never in my life experienced. As a young adult navigating the art of growing up, the environment around me can seem chaotic and overwhelming. Sometimes, I prioritize schoolwork and other stuff over God. I want to grow in my faith and be able to have a stronger connection with God in making him the priority of my life.

The beauty of this trip is that I would have more than God to be with. I understand the importance of a loving and supportive community. The other group members would enable me to be in a positive environment. I have been on a religious pilgrimage before through my youth group in South Bend, Indiana. We rode approximately 430 miles by bicycle within a span of six days. When Jeremiah kept talking about the exhaustion, I kept thinking about the bike trip. Even though your muscles ache and do not want to move, you push through it. I am excited to be in an environment where everyone is supportive because they would understand the lengths it took to get to the destination, Santiago de Compostela.

Another reason why I am interested in going to the Camino is that I have never been out of the country. I took four years of Spanish in high school and it would be eye-opening to experience the culture and a different country. Even though the body is tired of walking miles a day, there is beauty in the journey. I think of the mountains of Spain and what they would look like. As you could tell, we get to travel through many cities and towns of Spain. It amazes me that there are many pilgrims that have different stories and cultural backgrounds, yet everyone comes together and walks the Camino to reach the same destination.

This is a wonderful opportunity that I hope to make possible with your help! Anything helps and will be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions, please contact me. I would love to anser any questions you may have. ¡Gracias, mis amigos!
