My Travel Story

by: Naimah Grayson Start Date: Oct 21, 2017 - End Date: Aug 16, 2018
Traveling has always been a dream of mine. I grew up watching my grandmother fly state to state, country to country, and it was always something that I wanted to do, but lacked the funds to do so.

The year my grandmother died, I joined the military. I figured, what better way of traveling the world than serving my country and getting paid to do so? Good plan, right? I thought so too.

Well, I ended up getting stationed somewhere in North Dakota. Me, a Florida girl! I know. But I wanted to travel, and well... That was traveling even if it was a place I never wanted to go.

My time in the military I was able to save up money and when I got deployed I got to do something I never thought I would. I rode a camel! Seeing different cultures while I was deployed ignited a fire for traveling in me that I hadn’t had in a while.

Unfortunately, my time in the military came to an end due to some medical reasons. My last year in the military was a very hard one. I lost my aunt, and my other was often in and out of the hospital.  I was battling with some very harsh mental health issues and ended up having to go to inpatient treatment facilities three times in three months. I ended up being medically discharged from the military due to these issues, and sadly that’s not where the struggle ended.

I started being somewhat of a recluse, and my love for traveling died down a little. I was making less money than I was in the military and ended up getting in a lot of debt, barely being able to keep my head above water. I had a few mental health emergencies, but after a while I knew this is not what I wanted my life to become. I began doing jobs, saving up money to clear my debt. And clear my debt I did.

Now I’m at a place where I want to travel again, and I believe it would help with my mental health. I want to have that same fire that I had as a child when I saw my grandmother traveling all the time. I want to do something with my life that gives me meaning, and so I’m asking for a bit of help to get started. Anything will help, and i’ll be eternally grateful.

I will be eternally grateful for any amount donated, and I want to thank you just for taking the time to read this. Have a great day!
