Rhythms of Guinea: A journey to learn & love
My Travel Story
I am reaching out to you with excitement and a heartfelt mission that combines my passion for music with a desire to make a positive impact. I have an extraordinary opportunity to travel to Guinea, West Africa, to immerse myself in the rich cultural heritage of drumming and percussion, while also giving back to the local community.
For as long as I can remember, the beat of the drum has resonated deep within my soul. It's more than just music to me; it's a language of connection to my ancestral land, a pathway to cultural understanding, and a source of joy and inspiration. Now, I have the chance to journey to the birthplace of these rhythms and the djembe — Guinea — to study with master drummers and deepen my understanding of this ancient art form.
But this trip is about more than just personal enrichment; it's about using music as a tool for social change and community empowerment. While in Guinea, I am committed to giving back to the local community in meaningful ways, whether it be a donation of school or art supplies, supporting local arts initiatives, or contributing to a small business that sells food or water on the roadside. No offering could ever be too small.
However, I cannot embark on this journey alone. Traveling to Guinea and participating in drum lessons requires financial support, including airfare, accommodations, lesson fees, and supplies. Additionally, I aim to allocate a portion of the funds raised towards community projects and initiatives that will leave a lasting impact on the lives of those I encounter.
Your contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference — not only in helping me pursue my passion for music but also in providing for the local communities in Guinea. Together, we can create harmony out of diversity, unity out of difference, and hope out of adversity.
As a performer in The DAY (Drum Artz Yoga) Program ensemble since 2018, it is my hope that I will learn even more from Guinea’s masters and propel my skills to higher heights, returning to the U.S. more knowledgeable and proficient in this most beautiful art form.
Join me on this transformative journey to Guinea, where the rhythms of the drum echo the heartbeat of humanity. Let's write a story of cultural exchange, mutual respect, and shared humanity — a story that transcends borders and celebrates the power of music to unite us all.
Thank you for your generosity, your support, and your belief in the power of music to warm hearts and change lives.
It is not just what Guinea can do for me. It is what I can do for Guinea.
With gratitude and rhythm,
Kerri Thurman

More Than Drum And Dance
In 2023 I gave a city of Hampton shirt (my employer) to my drum sister Bonney when she went to Guinea. I arrive this year and see the daughter wearing said shirt. When you give, people will show you just how much they appreciate the kindness for a long time. Guinea has opened my mind and heart. -
Gratitude
I am so thankful to everyone that has donated. I'm even thankful for those that have wished me well and who really want to see me make it to Guinea. Always love.
