My Travel Story

My dream has been to become a pediatric oncologist since I was twelve years old; a dream that began when my Papa was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and simultaneously my teacher's daughter was fighting for her life with a similar cancer. My eyes were opened to the effects that cancer has on any individual however I was drawn specifically to the children. This past summer I had the opportunity to volunteer at a camp specifically for children who were battling cancer and their siblings. I have never felt so much love and appreciation for life as I did during that week. My uncle who works as an oncologist now began his medical journey in Germany and then moved to the United States. I believe that his time in another culture is what makes him such a fantastic doctor today. Understanding other cultures and learning from different individuals makes you not only a better human but a better doctor. I want to ensure that I provide the best care to my future patients but that I also am the best friend student and peer to those around me. I believe that studying abroad will give me the unique opportunity to gain a new understanding of the world that I am so lucky to live in.
