My Travel Story

by: Dóra Veres Start Date: Nov 29, 2023 - End Date: Aug 28, 2024

Welcome!
I am Dora, a 25 years old architect student from Budapest.
I have a very long-standing desire to volunteer as an architect in a country in need, as I want to contribute my skills to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those who can't afford to have a home. I would like to go on a volunteer trip, where I could help build and renovate houses, teach useful tactics about sustainable construction and how to use the raw materials available in the country.
I have also volunteered in the past, I have been to Portugal where I helped with housework (all through the Worldpackers organisation) and I have also volunteered in Hungary with the Maltese charity service (they usually cook meals for people in need and sometimes build or renovate homes).

This kind of volunteering is quite simple, you can apply for jobs through an organisation called Worldpackers or Workaway, after paying a one-time registration fee (which is around $40-50). During such a volunteering experience, the host provides accommodation. Since this work is needed in poorer countries (Africa and some Asian countries), the hosts cannot provide anything other than accommodation and ask for a daily contribution for food and drinking water, about $5-10 per day. (My plan is to stay for at least 2 months.)
Financially I cannot afford to volunteer and have to pay on top of that, so I would need money to pay the daily fees and return flights.

The opportunity to volunteer in Africa or Asia would not only enrich my approach-to-life experience but also allow me to apply my architectural knowledge in a real-world context. I am drawn to this mission because it aligns perfectly with my commitment to social responsibility and community development.
I see this experience as a chance to immerse myself in diverse cultures, collaborate with local communities, and address the pressing issue of inadequate housing. By participating in this project, I hope to gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by these communities and contribute to sustainable, culturally sensitive solutions.

I am grateful for your time and consideration. Thank you for supporting students who aspire to make a positive change through their dreams.
