Volunteering in Kenya: Special needs children
My Travel Story
My grandma was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks before me and my sister were due to be born with consultants telling her she has 6 months to live. Her reply “I have a family to live for and a daughter with two new babies on the way I very much need to live for”
She raised me from a child to love purely, showed me unconditional love through her commitment to faith and through me and my sister until she died when we were 16. Loosing my grandparents was the saddest time of my life but i feel incredibly blessed to have the time that I did with them.
I am using this experience as a motivation for embarking on a new adventure, one that will help the most disadvantaged children in the world. On this trip, I will be going to help children with complex special needs with the things they need to live healthy fulfilled lives, hopefully putting some smiles on their faces along the way. The Kenyan culture is built largely around family values and beliefs, and it is expected that children should be able to contribute while at home and ultimately provide for themselves when they reach adulthood. However, there are large numbers of children born with disabilities who don’t have access to support and can’t provide for themselves.
I know that a few weeks in Africa isn’t me going to change the world. It’s not going to change how these children live. But I can certainly help ease it by bringing joy, helping them in every way I can and certainly showing them love.
Always carry my grandma in my heart everyday with every thought I have. But this trip is also in her name for her aswell. I’ll forever be in her debt.
Any money you can sponsor to help me with my mission would be hugely appreciated
