My Travel Story

by: Teri Tracy Start Date: Feb 15, 2020 - End Date: Jul 3, 2020
An opportunity for two college students, parents, and future doctors to explore the biodiversity of Belize and Guatamela on a once-in-a-lifetime study abroad journey through Centralia College!
Hello!
Our names are Teri and Keiten; we are two full-time college students who are hoping to embark on a journey that will enrich our perspective on world health and biodiversity! We will be taking this trip in July through our local community college as students, and aim to learn more about how different climates affect our natural, anthropological, and biodiverse populations.

About Us
Teri is a second-year Anthropology student who aims to pursue a doctorate degree in Medical Anthropology with a focus on Genetic Medicine. She is an honor student, the president of the Environmental Science club at the college, and the botanist at the college conservatory. Her goals include developing research in genetics to cure many genetic diseases, studying enthnobotany and biology, and working for the CDC to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
Keiten is a first-year Radiology student, currently following a Medical Assistant degree plan. He is also an honor roll student, an example of a perfect student, and a leader. Keiten is also in the Environmental Science club and puts his all into everything he does. Currently, Keiten plans to follow into radiological science and to explore the field in ways many scientists before him have overlooked.
Both students are together the parents of two boys, for whom they wish to set an example. They are both dedicated to their schooling, research, and future fields. As prospective scientists, each student looks forward to learning as much about not just Latin America, but also the rest of the world as they can in order to enrich their academic careers. They hope to make big changes in the world, not just in science but in the individual lives of everyone who benefits from their work.

The Trip
This trip will be a biodiversity tour through Belize and Guatemala, highlighting important historical and current aspects of a wise range of scientific fields. We will study ancient Mayan ruins, anthropologically unique monkeys, botanical wonders, and many, many more important and impactful parts of the countries. Our travels will take us from the deep forests to the coasts, where we will dive down to observe the coral reefs and worls impacts on them. We will be abroad for 19 days with two of the College's best scientists and eight of our peers.
