Hello everyone! My name is Paula Cabanilles, I have recently graduated in the Master’s Degree in Marine Conservation at the University of Oviedo (Spain). Having been born and raised all my life by the Mediterranean Sea, my connexion with all its environments and creatures is extremely tight and I cannot conceive of my life separated from the sea and without doing anything I can for its welfare. 

Now I need your help to get to El Salvador the next whale season (November to April) in order to collaborate with Proyecto Megaptera, a project of young biologists that are studying the distribution, behaviour and conservation of cetaceans in Los Cobanos Natural Protected Area. Since this country still has no cetacean studies, it is highly important to generate information that will help managers to develop effective conservation strategies. Furthermore, whale watching has recently become an alternative source of income for artisanal fishermen in the area. Therefore, studying these animals and their environment will help local workers to provide a better service while improving their economy through ecotourism.

I have my mind focused on conducting my PhD in the near future and I am deeply confident that it could not be related to anything other than marine mammals. I would love to work hand in hand with this organisation and take a further step in my scientific career in order to better understand our marine ecosystems and being able to help them specially at this critical point for the Earth.

¡Hola a todos! Mi nombre es Paula Cabanilles, me he graduado recientemente en el Máster en Conservación Marina de la Universidad de Oviedo (España). Al haber nacido y crecido toda mi vida junto al Mediterráneo, mi conexión con todos sus ecosistemas y criaturas es muy estrecha y no concibo mi vida separada del mar y sin hacer todo lo posible por su bienestar.

Ahora necesito vuestra ayuda para llegar a El Salvador durante la próxima temporada de ballenas (de noviembre a abril) para colaborar con el Proyecto Megaptera, un proyecto de jóvenes biólogos que están estudiando la distribución, el comportamiento y la conservación de los cetáceos en el Área Natural Protegida Los Cóbanos. Dado que este país aún no cuenta con estudios sobre cetáceos, es muy importante generar información que ayude a los gestores a desarrollar estrategias de conservación eficaces. Además, la observación de cetáceos se ha convertido recientemente en una fuente alternativa de ingresos para los pescadores artesanales de la zona. Por lo tanto, el estudio de estos animales y su entorno ayudará a estos trabajadores locales a prestar un mejor servicio y a mejorar su economía a través del ecoturismo.

Quiero realizar mi doctorado en un futuro próximo y estoy profundamente convencida de que no podría estar relacionado con otra cosa que no fueran los mamíferos marinos. Me encantaría poder trabajar de la mano de esta organización y dar un paso más en mi carrera científica para entender mejor los ecosistemas marinos y poder ayudarlos especialmente en este momento tan crítico para la Tierra.
