SLV Mental Health Volunteering in Sri-Lanka!
My Travel Story
My name is Kitty and I am fundraising for my 5-week mental health psychology placement in Sri Lanka starting this June! I'll be working with SLV, which is a fantastic voluntary organisation. SLV runs AMAZING projects to help the local community while simultaneously enabling students (ME!) and graduates to gain valuable experience in a totally different culture. I will be loaning (and developing) my skills to this organisation and am really looking forward to getting stuck in to a new culture!
I will be working in Sri Lanka with individuals who suffer with mental health issues. I will be running activities for patients using sensory, music and creative therapies to engage with patients on a variety of wards in multiple institutions. I will be attending workshops run by Samutthana, the King’s College London resource centre for trauma, displacement and mental health. The main aim of Samutthana is to train and support organisations and individuals to respond to the psychosocial needs of trauma sufferers i.e. tsunami survivors and those who have experienced civil conflict in Sri Lanka.
In addition to these projects I will also be working with individuals with special needs and teaching English to children and young people on vocational courses. I will be using my skills to work with those who may be marginalized in Sri Lankan society. My lodgings will be with other volunteers and with a Sri Lankan family.
PLEASE HELP A GIRL OUT AND DONATE IF YOU CAN SPARE SOME PENNIES (PREFERABLY POUNDS :D ) For those of you who donate I PROMISE to make you a Sri Lankan curry upon my return as a MASSIVE THANK YOU ;D Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!!! YOU'LL BE DUE SOME GOOD KARMA IN RETURN FOR HELPING ME FUND MY WAY TO SRI LANKA!!!
