My Travel Story

by: Tamsin Lamberth Start Date: Feb 17, 2017 - End Date: Aug 16, 2017
In July 2017 I’m going to be volunteering in partnership with African Adventures in Nakuru, Kenya. Whilst there I will work at schools with children from underprivileged communities in Nakuru - providing teaching assistance and getting involved with construction and renovation work to build new classrooms and school facilities. I am looking forward to making a positive difference.

Mama Kerry is one of the projects I could potentially be working on. Project Co-ordinator William Othieno was inspired to set up Mama Kerry school in the wake of the post-2007 election violence, which displaced many families in the Rhonda community. African Adventures volunteers have helped to construct a further two classrooms on the site but more are needed in order to reduce classes to less than 35 children per class.

Ungana Academy is also another area of where I could be working. African Adventures began working with Ungana Academy in 2013. Since that time, volunteers have helped to construct six new classrooms, reducing classroom numbers.Katherine Abungana established Ungana Academy in 1994 in Kaptembwa, an area in central Nakuru, to provide nutritious meals for children who were extremely malnourished. As time progressed, Katherine decided to transform the academy into a school where she could provide both food and an education for the children.

The cost of the trip is £2200 and I have been busy fundraising already. Running stalls at school plays, selling food and drinks to students at school, our school team has also made cakes that have been sold at our local market.

I am now looking to do a skydive in order to raise more money towards my trip. in order to do my skydive I need raise at least £500 . I will be jumping with a company called Go-Skydive.

I also need to raise some funds to take much needed supplies with me such as children's clothing, pencils, pencil sharpners, chalk and paper.
