My Travel Story

by: Emily Weishaar Start Date: Apr 11, 2021 - End Date: Aug 10, 2021
South Korea has been on my mind since Summer of 2016. In high school I created my own independent study class so I could study Korean (to which I learned I needed a professional teacher to fully understand the language properly). My family told me this would be a phase and I would soon grow tired of this country I've never even visited, but as the years went on I grew more and more interested. In the years following 2016, I've done research, read books, made friends, visited twice, and now have the most precious opportunity to study fashion and business at Ewha Womans University. A dream I never thought would ever come true. Although I'm currently studying Sales and Marketing at my university in Montana, there are zero courses within probably a 500 mile radius on fashion design. I learned on a 2019 trip to Seoul that fashion was going to be my life-long dream as I people-watched from a "Twosome Place" coffee shop in Hongdae. Never before had I seen so many people care so much about sending a message through clothing and experimenting with such a vast array of garments. From that moment on I knew I needed to start my own fashion design business to hopefully influence a new generation of fashionistas.

I always knew if I studied abroad it would be to Seoul, but the fashion portion was a newer revelation. As I did my research on schools fitting my major, I found Ewha. Not only do they have classes on business, but fashion as well. A rusty, old bell rang out in the deepest depths of my heart. This is the school I'm meant to be at!

In the future, my plans are to create a pop-up fashion shop that moves around between South Korea, Japan, America, and possibly some European countries, as well. The fashion I create is important because it's all about inclusivity, love, and equality within the realms of race, all sizes and shapes of bodies, sexual orientation, and just about everything you can think of. My fashion sends a message to everybody encouraging them to love themselves and be confident in whatever you choose to wear. Under the exterior, we are all just full of love and dreams. I love to explain these feelings using fashion as my medium of choice.

Each time I've visited South Korea, I cry when I have to leave. My soul feels at-home and safe-- almost as if I had lived there in a past life. It's unexplainable in words, but I'm sure anyone who has visited a different place they've felt so passionate about can understand. Each time I come home, I plan on when I can visit again. Now I'm going to be living there? Unbelievable. My 17-year-old self can barely contain all her excitement! I'm happy to give this to her. She worked hard and did all her research over the years. She's stepped out of her comfort-zone and embarrassed herself enough to learn the correct ways of doing certain things in South Korea. I think she's ready to go on this once in a lifetime adventure!
