My Travel Story

Closet farmers!
That is how we like to describe ourselves. Yes, we live in Cape Town (a large city by South Africa's standards), so we are city folk too, but our hearts have long burned with a passion for farming. And not just any farming - we love the idea of bio-dynamic, sustainable, regenerative famring that is built on permeculture ideology. We get so excited about the idea that we can nuture and collaborate with creation in such way that not only produces a bountiful harvest, but that also leaves the land better than when we began. we are pasionate about growing food that brings healing to the bodies of those that consume it. Those passions have expressed themselves in us trying to maximise the limited land we have in the city (think urban farming with a a bunch of hens for eggs, bee hives, vegetables, fruit trees, compost heaps, worm bins and even a maggot farm). It is more than just a hobby, it is a real passion and dream for us.
And now we hope this passion has a 'next step' to live into. We are in a fortunate position to have three months break from the church where I serve as a pastor, and would love to explore this passion for farming more. We (my wife, four kids and myself) have the wonderful opportunity to live and learn on a fantastic bio-dynamic farm in Florida, as we work (for free) alongside the farmer and his family.
We honestly do not know if our future holds our own farming adventure for our family, or what His plan for us is. But what a great chance this is to learn and grow and immerse ourselves in a farming lifestyle. And what an incredible learning adventure for our homeschooled kids.
Our hope would be to bring all the principles and ideas we learn back to a South African context, and be even better equipped to maximise whatever peiece of the earth we find ourselves on. And who knows, maybe God can use us to begin influencing how others view farming, farms and food in our own country.
But we need help in getting there please. We need to finance our plane tickets and visas. And maybe a bit extra for a family visit to Disney while we are so close :)
