My Travel Story

by: Kaitlyn Gardner Start Date: Oct 5, 2016 - End Date: Apr 4, 2017
My name is Kaitlyn Gardner, I am a junior nursing student at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. This summer (June 15-30) I will have the opportunity to travel to Kitale, Kenya for a Transcultural Nursing class! This trip will consist of helping out at a local hospital, visiting the nursing school, visiting children at the orphanage, visiting the high school, sightseeing and experiencing life in Africa! In going to Africa I will get credit at my University as well as experience a once in a life time trip. As most could guess, the healthcare system is much different in Kitale, the public hospitals generally do not have gloves, the nurses do not get stethoscopes and laboring mothers share beds, hearing about this from students who have gone this past summer and how much joy they brought these people by just being there and the supplies they donated I am deeply compelled to head to Kenya! Along with the hospital we will also get to visit the Children’s home multiple times throughout our stay, to see the excitement we will bring to these children (even if only for a couple days) will be life-changing in itself. This trip is much more than a class, after a lot of praying I feel God calling me to this area, whether it is to change someone else’s life or to change mine.

But like most things in life, this adventure of a lifetime does not come without a price. My whole trip (airfare, lodging, excursions, etc.) is $2,500 along with $916 for my class tuition and $30 for the books. That being said, I created this fund to help make this study abroad a reality. I'm inviting all of you to be a part of my trip and am hopeful that my goal can be met through your generosity!
