My Travel Story

by: A C Start Date: Oct 3, 2014 - End Date: Nov 20, 2014
For the past year I have been volunteering on organic farms around the world and learning many different natural building techniques such as bamboo construction, cob, and strawbale building. This opportunity to build an Earthship in Tasmania would be a wonderful learning experience to explore natural building using recyclable materials.

A little more about Earthsips:
What is an Earthship? A earthship house is made up of rammed earth and tires. The tires are stacked (staggered) like bricks. Each tire has earth pounded into them until firmly packed. Once the tires are packed, they are very difficult to move and form quite a dense wall. The walls are load bearing and provide thermal mass which is an important attribute to any energy efficient house. Thermal mass stores heat and releases the heat slowly. This keeps indoor temperature constant while outside temperatures fluctuate. Once the walls are in place, the walls are quite often plastered over and appear very similar to an adobe style house. (source: daycreek.com) This makes the house energy efficient and self-sustainable through the use of solar passive design and the recyclable materials used to build the house.

My goal for traveling has been to learn different alternative farming methods, permaculture, and natural building, so that I may take these skills and apply them to my life back home in America. The Earthship build in Tasmania will connect me with like minded folks and not only teach about Earthships but also about solar passive design, rocket stove construction, and how to make natural products.

I hope that one day I may build my own house and invite travelers such as myself to participate in the build to gain an informative and meaningful experince about natural building.
