My Travel Story

by: Georgina Denis Start Date: Nov 12, 2016 - End Date: Dec 12, 2016
Hello! I'm currenly raising money for a two week volunteer trip to Nepal under the direction of my college's Rotaract Club and Branchburg Rotarary. The trip will be tkaing place from the 2nd of January 2017 to January 14. During this trip, we hope to not only explore the beautiful districts and cities of the country, but to provide aid through activities such as building houses, reading to children in educational settings, and providing disaster relief to communities impacted by occurances such as the earthquake that struck in 2015.

Oh, and my name is Georgina, I'm 19 and am currently studying to be a chemical engineer (and future Peace Corps volunteer). I suppose I can now fill you in with why it would mean the world to me to volunteer here.

*inhales*

My passion for volunteering doesn't fall short of the time I spend with my school's Rotaract Club, but for the idea that time is one of the most valuable things I think one could give to another. I've always grown up to see others believe that donations, such as this, sending out a monthly fee to a person/group in need, or handing out a $5 bill to the homeless would fill the place of the impact most think they're looking for. But sometimes we (including me) forget that those things, money and gifts, are replacable and so the impact still exists, but is easily diminshable.

Still, there's always been something about giving up my time, to hopefully extend the duration of another's that has me in goosebumps (as cliche as that may sound). I can't get back the time I spend trying to better another's life, and I've always naturally been okay with that fact. The value of time over money is said to make a person happiest, and though we can think of both domestic and international instances where the opposite should apply, it helps to remember that the dollar has no intention of making one smile or fill with hope, but the person who has the means of helping does. Me wanting to volunteer also goes more towards my want to do more than just know, but understand. This doesn't just include the ways of the people, land, and cultures but the reason why I'm serving my time, and how we can use this knowlodge to help situations improve in the country by the masses.

For these reasons, a trip to Nepal seems like just the beginning of a journey of giving, that I hope never ends. It genuinely does means the world to me, even thinking about how much it could mean the world to them.

Thank you!
