My Travel Story

The expectation of many on a study abroad trip is they will be forced to step outside of their comfort zone and experience new things. Along with experiencing a new culture, living in a new place, meeting new people, and eating new foods, I’m hoping to learn invaluable skills that will assist me in my future as a public service worker. As a Criminal Justice and Psychology major, I hope to work in a culturally diverse environment with others who desire to contribute to bettering our society. This study abroad program affords me the opportunity to gain necessary skills to excel in my future endeavors. I hope to continue developing skills such as independence, adaptability, and conflict resolution. These are skills that will give me confidence in my personal and professional life long after studying abroad. Another skill I hope to acquire is cultural awareness and understanding. Two skills that will undoubtedly make me a better public service worker in the future. The skills I hope to strengthen while abroad are necessary, not only for my personal and professional growth, but for the growth and betterment of the people and community around me. One way to accomplish these skills and goals is by participating in volunteer opportunities offered while abroad such as working at the Indigenous Education Center or the Women’s Library Resource Center. Being able to come back and share my experience with others so they can understand and adopt the habits of another culture is exciting. Aside from skills you gain while studying abroad, I am seeking out this opportunity to demonstrate to future employers that stepping out of my comfort zone is not new to me. I am not afraid to try new things and experience change, and I look forward to doing both with on my journey to Sydney.
