My Travel Story

by: Kayleigh Gregory Start Date: Sep 20, 2019 - End Date: Sep 19, 2020
My name is Kayleigh and I am a second year student midwife studying in Bristol. As part of my training we are enabled the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world to expand our midwifery knowledge. This experience will not only nurture our development into autonomous midwives, but we as students can also have a positive influence on the care of women and practices’ of midwives abroad. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will allow me an insight into different cultures and the influences of socio-economics on pregnancy and birth. I have not yet decided on a country I am wishing to travel too. ( Unfortunately many elective/volunteering organisations take advantage of vulnerable women in developing countries who are unable consent allowing non-trained individuals to be “hands on” in their care. Because of this I need to research carefully before I select a location I wish to travel to)Furthermore, being a self funded project I also need to be cautious as electives often come with a large price tag. I am aware there are many out there who are far worse of than I, however the 40+ hours a week I work as a student are unpaid and the maintenance loan just about covers my living expenses, so I do not have much to put aside to save towards this opportunity. I am hoping to further do several fundraising activities over the next year as well as working as much as possible to cover the majority of the expenses. For further support with the cost of this placement, I have decided to reach out to the wider community. I understand this is a big ask of those around me, but every penny is massively appreciated and will help shape my midwifery adventure! Thank you so much for every donation and I will do regular updates with any progressions in this journey. I am looking forward to being able to learn from and support those in an environment so different to the UK. *photo taken and shared with consent of both parents*
