My Travel Story

Hi I am currently a student studying BA Anthropology in the UK and I am planning to go for a mental health placement in Sri Lanka for 5 weeks this Auguest. Few psychiatrists resident in Sri Lanka and mental health facilities in the country are scarce and largely restricted to medication. On this programme with SLV Global, which is a graduate-led group for providing psychology students with hands-on experience in the psychology and especially mental health sector, I will be spending half a day in a psychiatry facility, half a day in a rehabilitation centre and the rest of my working week working for various projects (ranging from youth teaching to running activities at centres for people with special needs). While the placement is designed to provide maximum benefit for the community I will be staying with for the 5 weeks, it also benefits me in terms of getting real-life experience of working in the mental health sector in a less traditional way, applying my own knowledge for the people in need, future career development and experiencing a totally different but amazing culture.
