My Travel Story

by: James Simina Start Date: May 31, 2024 - End Date: Jul 31, 2024
Hello, My name is James and I was born in Saipan (Northern Mariana Island) but was raised in a Micronesian family that speaks 2 local languages as I was also learning English. I am a college student majoring in foreign languages at a community college and one of the staff had got my attention of going to abroad for 10 weeks. My main goal is to master 3 languages: Chinese, German, and Japanese which I'm currently focusing on. Going to Japan will help me learn more of the language thoroughly with the locals, This is very nerve-racking because this will be my first time stepping outside of U.S. soil and going to a foreign country that I won't be getting used to like I am in the States BUT this is the best one time thing in my life that I will get to experience trying authentic food, learning to use foreign currency, and getting to know a country so deeply by knowing what you hear from other people or things you learned in school before. the destination my abroad program chose was Miyazaki, Japan, located in the Southern region of Japan. It is most famous for its temples, including the beautiful and iconic Meoto Iwa, also known as "The Wedding Rock". There is also an ancient city called Kumamoto, which is home to Kumamoto Castle. This will be a very meaningful moment for me because like I said before I haven't gone out of the U.S. This will be one of the biggest memories I will get and despite my major, I still want to go out and also experience it as well of improving my language lot more. as for my future career, I want to be an interpreter and be able to help as many people as much.
