As a child of Ethiopian-born parents, many things seemed out of my reach, including finding myself with the opportunity to actually study abroad in Ethiopia. Yet my wildest dreams came true, and San Diego State University is providing its students with the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Ethiopia.

Besides allowing the opportunity to learn more about myself, my people and the history of Ethiopia, studying abroad is an important experience because it would enhance my cultural knowledge. Beyond this, it would further my understanding of the differences among Ethiopian people and the different experiences they have. As a graduate student studying to receive my MS in Multicultural Community Counseling, it is important that I have the understanding and skills to work with people from diverse backgrounds. Although I am familiar with the Amharic and Tigrinya cultures within Ethiopia, I am not well-informed about the other cultures. Studying abroad in Ethiopia would change this fact, and allow me to be more knowledgeable of other Ethiopian cultures.

Presently, I am working with the East African community within the City Heights area of San Diego as a counselor in training, a member of the United Women of East Africa and the African Advisory Committee for Mental Health. Studying abroad in Ethiopia would allow me to understand more about the other cultures of my brothers and sisters; which in turn would allow me to be able to work with and service more diverse Ethiopians in the City Heights area.
