A Lifetime of Music, Love, and Resilience – Let’s Give Them This Final Journey

My parents, Alan and Valerie Ginter, have spent their lives overcoming incredible challenges. My father is an internationally recognized musician who has dedicated his life to his craft, touring and performing around the world. My mother has been his unwavering support through every triumph and hardship.

Their biggest challenge began in 1985 when my brother was struck by a car. The aftermath was devastating—emotionally, physically, and financially. They lost everything to get him the care he needed, and even then, it took decades of struggle before he was finally placed on the Garfield Neurobehavioral Center’s waiting list in Oakland. After seven long years, he was accepted, and today, he has the security and care he deserves. But the sacrifices my parents made to get him there have left them in financial hardship.

Now in their mid-seventies, my father, at 77, still works day and night. Like many baby boomers, they lost more than half their 401(k) retirement savings during the 2007–2008 recession and were forced to retire early, only to be hit again by another economic downturn and rising living costs. My father continues to work as a musician and substitute teacher, but their income is minimal, and they rely on Social Security and any support I can provide.

Despite it all, my father has one last international tour in September 2026 with the Symphonia Phonotones. This may be his final time on stage overseas, and more than anything, he wants my mother and me to be by his side—just like we were for his first tours.

This trip is even more meaningful because in October 2026, my parents will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. This journey is my early anniversary gift to them—a chance to celebrate their incredible life together and everything they have endured and built as a family.

This isn’t just a trip. It’s a celebration of a lifetime of resilience, of never giving up, and of a love story that has endured every trial thrown their way. I need to raise $6,000 to cover my mother’s travel expenses so she can be there for this final journey.

I know times are tough for everyone, and this may seem like a luxury. But for my parents, it’s a dream—one that represents everything they have fought for and overcome. If you have anything to give, no matter how small, it would mean the world to us. And if I can ever repay the kindness in any way, please let me know.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Let’s give Alan and Valerie this one last hoorah!

With gratitude,
Helene Ginter
