My Travel Story

by: Annika Sullivan Start Date: Jan 28, 2020 - End Date: Jun 25, 2020
I am so grateful to have been selected to attend the Marine Biology and Sociology program in Bali, Indonesia during the summer of 2020. This program is run by my school, Santa Barbara City College. We plan on exploring the city of Ubud: discovering new foods, cultures, dances, and religions. Our group will also go on a few snorkeling excursions in a variety of locations to see the abundance of life in the oceans of Bali. I have chosen to attend this study abroad program due to the emphasis on marine biology, as it is my intended major. As someone who has had little opportunity to travel, I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the world, specifically coastal communities and environments. This program will give me the chance to fully immerse myself in my education and gain more experience working in the water (snorkeling or SCUBA diving), while also immersing myself in a new culture.

I believe this study abroad program will provide me with the proper skills and knowledge to further my marine biology education. I look forward to becoming more comfortable working in the water and working in a country that speaks a different language than my own, broadening my worldview. My long term goals include collecting data in the ocean for research on: whale shark diet, migration patterns, life cycles, and how these animals deal with climate change. I truly believe that this program will allow me to network, learn new skills, and act as a stepping stone to my ultimate goals.
