My Travel Story

by: Jacqueline BUTCH Start Date: Feb 10, 2021 - End Date: Nov 9, 2021
Hi Everyone! My name is Jackie and I am a third year Doctor of Physical Therapy Student in East Tennessee.

Through my program I have had the oportunity to take some elective courses in Rural and Global Healthcare and Interprofessional Education and Collaboration. I am pursuing my interest in these areas by spending four weeks interning in Pokhara, Nepal this fall. I will be spending three weeks in a hospital in the city, where I will be working with local physiotherapists treating patients with a variety of conditions. I will be spending my last week in a small rural village where I will be treating patients in a local clinic in the mornings and spending my afternoons focusing on learning about the culture of the village and country.

I hope to use this experience to further my understanding of global health concerns and implement this knowledge in my future clinical practice.

While I am committed to this experience regardless of external funding, any support would help to alleviate the costs related to my travel and experience in Nepal. I appreciate anything you are willing to donate to this incredible learning experience.

UPDATE!! Nepal's a bust, but I'll still be traveling abroad.
I have been keeping myself appraised of the situation in Nepal and knew it wasn't looking great. I have had several phone calls with staff at Work the World, who have been extremely helpful and supportive through this process.
Last week, I received official news that placements in Nepal would not resume by the planned time of my trip. My timeline is not very flexible due to graduation, licensure, and eventually getting a job (hopefully), so I was unable to reschedule my trip to Nepal. Instead, I worked with the organization to alter the destination of my internship and will be traveling to Takoradi, Ghana!
While I am disappointed that I won't be able to travel to Nepal at this time, I am by no means disappointed to be traveling to Ghana!

I am so excited to be able to work with and learn from health professionals and other students in Takoradi!
