My Travel Story

by: William Cairns Start Date: Feb 26, 2019 - End Date: Nov 25, 2019
Hi, my name is Will, I am a year 10 student at Kew High School. I have been given an opportunity to travel to Borneo, Malaysia with a company called Antipodeans, and a group of 19 other students.

This is no ordinary holiday, this is a 3-week expedition through the developing country Borneo. This expedition is broken down into three parts the 'project', the 'trek' and 'explore'. The 'project' will involve our group completing a community task, we don’t yet know what our project will be but it could be refurbishing a house, building a toilet block, building a well or perhaps helping to build or refurbish something for the local school. For our 'trek' our team decided that we will be climbing Mt Kinabalu, the largest mountain in Malaysia. This will be a challenging two-day experience but we will be met with an amazing view from above the clouds at 4,095m above sea level. When we are not partaking in the 'trek' or the 'project' we are immersing ourselves into the culture and doing as the locals would do, visiting markets, trying different foods and learning about the lives of the people in Borneo. Although we are under adult supervision to ensure we don’t make any life-endangering decisions, the decision making will ultimately be left to us! We as a group are required to organise our own transportation, accommodation and food.

This opportunity is a life-changing experience that I am extremely looking forward to, I am hoping to raise most of the cost so, anything that can be contributed is highly appreciated.
