My Travel Story

During my time in South Africa, I will be providing care and education to children that come from disadvantaged backgrounds and this will be my main priority throughout the trip. During this project I will be placed in day care centres attended by children from poor backgrounds and broken homes. Some of the children have lost their parents to crime, alcohol or drug abuse, and HIV/ AIDS, forcing them to live with their relatives or neighbours, who often do not have the means to take proper care of them. In addition to teaching and caring for these children, I will be involved in planning and designing lessons, organizing games and activities, as well as general duties such as clean up, cooking and feeding the children. I am looking forward and I am so excited to help those in need.

Many South African children grow up with limited access to education, only 17 out of every 100 children having the opportunity to attend some form of early childhood schooling. As a volunteer, I will be making it easier for low-income families to give their children this important opportunity for a good start in life by assisting in a large childcare center, and which they work very closely with the local education department and aims to provide high quality care and education to children from disadvantaged areas.

During my volunteer experience I will be staying in a standard Africa living environment, on a single bed, with occasional power outages (usually at night and lasts 2-5 hours) and eating Africa’s traditional meals, as well as making sure I purchase safe water to drink.

I am going with an open mind and I am ready for an incredibly eye-opening experience. As this trip is extremely expensive, I am looking for donations so I will be able to purchase extra items for the children, such as everyday necessities and toys for them to play with. Any little dime will do wonders and will make all the children's day.
