Going to My Homeland to Volunteer
My Travel Story
My name is Loana Piper. I'm 23 years old from the Bay Area California. I currently work in the nonprofit field as a Self-determination advocate, for systems impacted young women and trans youth experiencing houselessness, push out in schools and incarceration. I got into this field of work, because I was one of those young people experiencing the same things, and still as a young person, I do this work to make a change into my community and advocate for young people to use their voices for what they want. I'm passionate about this project and going to Vietnam, because that is my homeland, and I would love to be a part of the change and making a difference in all of my communities. My Vietnamese community and my African community. This is a meaningful experience for me, because I am a queer woman of color, potentially going to Vietnam to do childcare and or teach English. This experience for me would be life-changing and break generational cycles, seeing me being a teacher in my Vietnamese community.
